Fatima Mortada

Fatima Mortada is a Lebanese artist who graduated from the Lebanese University with an Honors Fine Arts degree in 2007. In 2009, she moved to the UK to pursue graduate studies at the University of Southampton, Winchester School of Art, where she obtained her Masters of Fine Arts (with distinction) in 2010, and a full 3-year scholarship for the doctoral program.

She has participated in several group exhibitions in Lebanon, France, United Kingdom, Spain and Jordan. The latter held its first exhibition at the “Mark Hachem” Gallery in Beirut, in 2014.

After moving to the UK and being exposed to the contemporary art scene, Mortada realized his inclination to tackle issues of identity, mythology and conflict that relate to his social background: the Middle East. She discovered a wide range of techniques and materials ranging from drawing, printmaking, painting to soft sculpture, installation, film, knitting and sewing. In 2017, she was selected for the XABACA project, a comprehensive art residency program, in Barcelona, aimed at forming an international network against censorship of the Arab female artist. Through this project, Fatima has contributed to the affirmation of the role of women artists in social transformation, as well as to their emancipation from the double oppression they suffer - as artists and as women.
