90'S C'ETAIT MIEUX AVANT

JULY 15 - AUGUST 15, 2020

This exhibition aims to create a bridge within a selection of artists of different ages and universes, united by their undeniable inspiration drawn from the heart of the 1990s and which animates their respective artistic practices.

The 1990s are also those of great socio-political upheaval. Thus, the gallery space welcomes for the occasion an eclectic palette of mediums: paintings, collages, sculptures, illustrations, photography and many others.

In sculptures and illustrations, “90's was better before” looks retrospectively at the digital revolution, with the arrival of the internet and mobile phones. It also celebrates the advent of video games, whose unmistakable period mascots are undoubtedly the Sony PlayStation, the Nintendo 64 and the Gameboy. How to evoke the 90's Tech register, without highlighting the resulting subcultures? Polaroids and other objects to discover will bring you back, for example, to the imprints left by advertising spots and other visual pastilles which have now become legendary, because they have been popularized by television.

The canvases are dedicated to music and create the crossover between the electronic current (House, Techno, Trance) and the golden age of Hip-Hop. These paintings pay a fervent tribute to legendary rap pioneers like Easy-E, Dr. Dre, 2Pac, and other big names. The new wave of R'n'B is not left behind either, the notable icons of the current all have their place.

The exhibition thus proposes to cross them again by means of collages or illustrations, in reference to denunciatory works such as the cult films Pulp Fiction or La Haine.

These various creations will be an opportunity to draw skilful slides, your best imaginary Air Max 90s (or not), between the themes specific to each of the presentations. From fashion to technology, including music, all the flagship nuggets of this decade will still make you vibrate, will be waiting for you until August 15.
